Blue eyed - brown eyed Experiment with Jane Elliot

Consider the experiment you watched in class and complete the following:

Choose ONE statement on POWER that we looked at in class on the first day. Type this statement into your blog post and say what it means and how this statement is somehow linked or relevant to the blue-eyed brown eyed experiment.

Read at least TWO other blog posts and comment on students opinion. You might for example say why you agree (or disagree) and why. You might simply ADD to their comment with further ideas.

  2. "Power is always dangerous. Power attracts the worst and corrupts the best." This statement is relevant to the blue and brown eyed experiment because of the way the children's attitude and thinking had changed. Before the teacher had declared that blue eyed students were better than brown eyed students, they were all charming little kids, besides their views on those of another colour. In the statement, the kids were the latter and yes, their opinions towards students of another eye colour changed. They started belittling, teasing and started feeling that they were superior. Only 15 minutes ago, when they didn't have any power above the brown eye students, they were all content with one another. Their behaviour changed when they were empowered and they abused what they had. Those charming little third graders became discriminating bullies in such a short time.

  3. 'Power is always dangerous. Power attracts the worst and corrupts the best.’ This statement means that power will make people do things you would not expect from them. There is no ways to escape the harm power will cause. The relation this statement has to the blue eyed brown eyed experiment is how the students behaviour changed because in the experiment what the teacher explained as wonderful thoughtful students, she then describes and nasty vicious monsters after the are given power.

  5. “Power is always dangerous. Power attracts the worst and corrupts the best.”

I choose this power statement because i think it clearly defines the sudden change that occurred to the students during this experiment. As seen in the video it only takes 15 minutes of power for the blue eyed kids to change to vicious and cruel kids by abusing their power. They started teasing each other and calling each other names making the brown eyed kids feel inferior. At the start, the blue eyed kids were such innocent, charming kids and to know that one of the students had such a crucial idea to use a yard stick, in case the brown eye kids went out of control definitely took me off guard. Personally i think this power statement interprets how power can corrupt not only the worst kind of people but also the best kind of people, seeing how power affected the little third graders in a matter of minutes.

  6. 'No matter how big the lie; repeat it often enough and the masses will
    regard it as the truth"
This is representative of the blue eyed brown eyed experiment because even though the lie that one eye color is better than the other, Jane Elliott kept on repeating that it is better and the children were keep on going towards the negative side.

    1. I agree with your explanation. The children were continuously being praised or criticized for their actions depending on their eye colour making them feel superior or inferior.

    2. I like how brief you kept your explanation. I agree the children were persuaded by the continuous lies feed to them.

  9. 'Power does not corrupt. Fear corrupts - perhaps the fear of loss of power'.
This is representative of the blue and brown eyed experiment because it took them 15 minutes to turn to one another and start calling names and being violent. They would think thoughts they wouldn't usually think and they would do things that they usually wouldn't do.

  13. 'The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any'
Because Jane Elliot told the blue eyed kids that they were not smart like the brown eyed kids and she made the blue eyed kids think that they don't have any power like they tease the brown eyed kids before.

  14. Clothes make the man and give him power. Naked people have little or no influence on society. I like this paragraph as police or army people seem to get a lot of respect and really stand out. This is the same deal with the collar but does the opposite thing and makes the lesser kids feel labeled.

  16. Power is always dangerous. Power attracts the worst and corrupts the best.

This represents the experiment held. Telling little kids what to do like not having the freedom to play could upset them or feel the jealously and lastly, not being treated properly. Jane Elliot may have focused on the negativity and may have gone too far to them but it's for the best, learning parts of discrimination such as the definition and the feeling.

  17. "No mater how big the the lie; repeat it often enough and the masses will regard it as the truth."
This is true because you can see it happen in the experiment.

  20. "Power is always dangerous. Power attracts the worst and corrupts the best."
i chose this statement because it describes how power can attract the worst people and even the most resilient and great people get corrupted and destroyed by the sheer evilness of power.

  21. "Power does not corrupt. Fear corrupts - perhaps the fear of loss of power" i choose this because blue eyed students and brown eyed students were one but after the teacher said blue eyed students were better. They tease brown eyed students.

  22. "The less power a man has, the more he likes to use it. Half the harm done in the world is due to people who want to feel important." I chose this quote because like in destroying Avalon, Sukey had the power to bully Avalon and she did because she wanted to feel important and really wanted to use her power.

  23. “The sole advantage of power is that you can do more good.”
This statement is dedicated to Jane Elliot who successfully changed the way her third grader students think. She created an experiment due to racism around the world including in her class. She had such a big power over black people since she was white but decided to use it against racism. Her students who had less power than she did and were at such young age were willingly accept the fact that she told them blue eyed people were better or the opposite. Unfortunately a lot of people complained and she ended up getting fired for her thoughtful experiment. Their parents complained about the experiment, but it didn’t make her apologize to them because she knew what she was doing was right, unfortunately she ended up getting fired because of her thoughtful experiment

  24. "the most common reason people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any."

This basically describes Jane Elliot's experiment. The kids in it gave up their dignity only due to a loss of confidence from the 'better kids'. Even though they had a dignity as well of confidence, it just took only a few hours until they started to give up only because of the 'better group.'
This describes society. Everyone getting influenced by the modern world. Those who don't fit in feel as if they don't belong, but actually these are the people who makes life worth living.
It's a pity Jane Elliot got fired, as she was just trying to help the kids.
